NRS 486.378.1 requires the
Motorcycle Safety Program to submit a report to the Governor and Legislative
Counsel Bureau no later than January 1 of each odd numbered year. This is the executive summary of that report.

Courses
Rider courses were offered by
the three community colleges and directly through the Department of Public
Safety. Also, private training providers
were authorized to conduct training, with state oversight. The Motorcycle Safety Program provided
subsidy to the colleges for 4,820 beginning and 392 experienced riders.

The Department of
Public Safety, with eight rural training sites, trained 688 new and 121
experienced riders.

Private sites,
with five training sites, trained 3,904 new and 327 experienced riders.
INSTRUCTORS
These courses were conducted
by state-licensed instructors. As of
FUNDING
NRS 482.480.4 provides
funding of the program. For every
motorcycle registered, the motorcycle program receives $6 to further rider
education and motorists’ awareness. For fiscal years 2005 and 2006, the program
received $631,591.

DETAILED REPORT
Pursuant to NRS 486.377, and
on behalf of the Governor’s Advisory Board on Motorcycle Safety, this report is
submitted on the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Traffic Safety Division,
Motorcycle Safety Program.
COURSES OFFERED
The Department of Public
Safety conducts statewide motorcycle training using contractors, private
authorized training sites, and direct training through the Department of Public
Safety. Presently, all contract training
is conducted by the University and Community College System of Nevada by
individual agreements with local colleges.
The Department of Public Safety provides subsidy to the colleges, in an

(ERC), the Sidecar/Trike Education Program (S/TEP), and the new instructor
preparation course (RCP).

FEES
COLLECTED
According to NRS 482.480,
Fees for Registration, the following excerpt allows fees to be collected for
motorcycle safety:
“4. For every motorcycle, a fee for registration
of $33 and for each motorcycle other than a trimobile, an additional fee of $6
for motorcycle safety. The additional
fee must be deposited in the state highway fund for credit to the account for
the program for the education of motorcycle riders.”
The fees collected for this
two year reporting period are $631,591.
