Live Traffic Hazards and Road Closures - NHP

The Nevada Elementary Traffic Safety Program Instructors Course

This is a free seminar for educators, law enforcement officers and community volunteers on teaching children the bicycle and pedestrian skills they need to be safe and survive in today's traffic environment.

Course participants are trained to teach The Nevada Elementary Traffic Safety Program. This program is designed for elementary school students in kindergarten through fifth grade and is modeled on the most innovative and advanced curriculums in the nation. Our mascot, SALLY, has won national awards for excellence in safety advertisements.

Educational materials highlighting vital bicycle and pedestrian safety skills for children are available free of charge to course graduates. These materials are continually upgraded to meet the safety requirements of today's traffic conditions.

Specific Topics Covered in the Course Include:

  • How to teach pedestrian and bicycle safety to children.
  • Major causes of pedestrian and bicycle crashes and their prevention.
  • Bicycle and pedestrian law in Nevada.
  • How to conduct community bicycle rodeos.
  • Bicycle emergency maneuvers.
  • Operating a bicycle safely under a variety of traffic conditions.
  • Advising community groups on bicycle and pedestrian safety.
  • Identifying and utilizing available volunteer and funding resources to support pedestrian and bicycle safety programs.
  • Proper fit and wear of bicycle helmets and major reasons for using them.
The course is accredited by the Nevada Department of Education (Course # SDE-08-2001), Clark County PDE (Course # 1572) and Sierra Nevada College. It is co-sponsored by the Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training Committee (POST). Graduate credit through Sierra Nevada College costs $50.00, and there is a $10.00 charge for Clark County PDE credit; otherwise, the course is FREE.
